Professor Ahmed F. Ghoniem

Ahmed Ghoniem is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he has been based since 1983. He is also Head, Fluid-Thermal Sciences Division and Director of the Reacting Gas Dynamics Laboratory.

Professor Ghoniem holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from the University of Cairo and an ME Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. His research has focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics, Analysis of Numerical Methods, Turbulent Reacting Flow, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Combustion Dynamics and Modeling. This has led to significant applications in aerospace and automotive propulsion, aerodynamics, simulations and control.

Professor Ghoniem has received a number of awards in these fields including the Ralph Teetor Educational Award, Society of Automotive Engineering in 1987, Certificate of Recognition, NASA in 1984 and a Research Initiation Award, National Science Foundation in 1984.

He has consulted extensively for Industrial Laboratories, Government Organisations and Academic Institutions, including United Technology Center, General Electric Corporate R&D, National Institute of Standards and Technology and Sandia National Laboratory. He has served on several boards for high performance computing institutions including PSC and NCSA.

Professor Ghoniem is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and member of the Combustion Institute, American Mathematical Society and the Society of Automotive Engineering.

Professor Ghoniem has published extensively in his fields including over 100 refereed journals. He is a regular participant in international events and has given over 100 invited talks worldwide.
